Hakaluki Haor is the largest ecological marsh wetland of Bangladesh. Hakaluki Haor is bounded by the Kushiara river as well as a part of Sonai Bardal river to the north, by Fenchuganj-Kulaura to the west and to the south and Kulaura-Beanibazar road to the east. It has a huge land area of 18,386 hectares.
There are more than 238 small, medium and large interconnecting beels, some of which are perennial and others are seasonal. During the rainy season, approximately 44,000 hectares of land area is covered by the beel. It supports a rich biodiversity and provides direct and indirect livelihood benefits to more than 19,0000 people. Hakaluki Haor is an important source of fish, it is famous for Kalibaus, Boal, Rui, Pabda, and Chapila are the major fish species found here. It is very important resting place for migratory waterfowls flying in from the north.
The most interesting speciesis the Barheaded Goose, hardly seen in fresh water wetland. It is known as a good grazing land in winter, people from villages around the Haor and also from distant areas send their herds for grazing. The unique haor system contributes to the beauty of the landscape both the monsoon and the dry season and almost it provides a wide range of economic and non-economic benefits to thelocal people as to the people of Bangladesh.
